The Project

Until well into the late 20th century, female composers were not or hardly ever taken seriously. Due to social norms, they could not attain the same status as their male counterparts nor were women in general considered to have the genius to create something extraordinary. Compositions by women were not given the same consideration  as those by their male contemporaries. As a result, music created by women was rarely brought to the attention of a wider audience during their lifetime.

Herb Tucmandl, the project initiator, suspected that the musical output of female composers from the 18th to 20th century, which received little attention and therefore little appreciation, contained an especially high proportion of high-quality works. These treasures were and are yet to be unearthed, performed and subsequently given their rightful place in music history.

Herb Tucmandl had no trouble finding many enthusiastic partners for this ambitious project. He was joined in this endeavor by Stefan Mendl, a pianist and professor of chamber music at the MDW; Sylvia Sagmeister, a piano teacher and musicologist; and the team members of his own company, Vienna Symphonic Library, a leader in the music industry  and the parent-company of Synchron Stage Vienna.

Synchron Stage Vienna

Located in the heart of Vienna, the historical scoring stage offers cutting-edge recording technology and superior acoustics for a wide variety of ensembles and musical styles – from chamber music to big symphony orchestras and choirs, from film and TV music to video games and commercials. Many international composers and film studios – like Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions, Disney+, Marvel Studios, Netflix, Amazon Video, BBC and Tencent – are enthusiastic about the facility’s one-of-a-kind features.

From its construction in the early 1940s until the 1950s, the facility shared its history with the Rosenhügel Filmstudios.  Because of the built-in ‘Lenkwil‘ cinema organ the building is classified as a historic landmark. Eminent classical artists such as Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan and Yehudi Menuhin also used the ‘Synchronhalle‘ for many legendary  recordings. After its renovation, it was re-opened in 2015 under the name ‘Synchron Stage Vienna‘. The facility is now considered one of the best recording studios in the world.

The large main hall, Stage A, can accommodate orchestras of up to 130 musicians and boasts exceptional acoustic properties for recording in various sound formats. Control Room A is not only the majestic 115 m² bridge of this massive studio complex, but it also offers ample space for staff members of all departments and guests alike . Up to 96 channels can be recorded at once with the huge SSL Duality Console.
