Herbert Tucmandl

Herbert Tucmandl was born in Vienna in 1966 and studied cello at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna (mdw). After a two-year orchestral career as a substitute with the Vienna State Opera‘s orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, he entered the film industry to train as a cinematographer and then later as a director.

In the following years, Tucmandl established himself as a film score composer by combining his knowledge of the world of film with his musical background.

In order to produce symphonic music, Tucmandl used the computer-based sample technology available at the time, but finding it limited, he set out to develop his own software products to meet higher demands. What was initially a development plan for his own use led to the founding of his own company, Vienna Symphonic Library GmbH, in 2000. VSL specializes in the development of sample libraries and music production software.

In addition to his development work within the Vienna Symphonic Library, Herbert Tucmandl continued to produce music, often in collaboration with Karl Markovics in his productions for film and TV. In the course of this collaboration, the need for a ‘scoring stage‘ (i.e., a studio for film music recordings in Vienna) became evident. Although Vienna has always enjoyed a worldwide reputation in the field of opera and concerts, the facet of film music scoring was almost non-existent.

In 2015, with the revitalization of the historic orchestral recording studio at Vienna’s Rosenhügel , Tucmandl created an internationally established recording studio under the name ‘Synchron Stage Vienna‘, which is equally appreciated for film music productions and classical music recordings. The scoring stage has gained recognition for both its film music productions and its classical music recordings.
